Hi,

I tried doing a search, but no luck. I may not of put the right word(s) in.

Anyway, on my dual core T9300, I'm finding that only one core is running. How do I get the second one to run?

How do I know if my GPU (Nvidia 8800 GTS) is also running, since the Task Manager doesn't show it?

Finally, has anyone come out w/some kind of management software for multi-core cpu's that assigns software to run on a set core? I've tried doing it in the Task Manager, but it doesn't lock on that application, when I do it w/say BOINC. It would be nice to assign Vista to operate only on say Core 0, and have say a game or even BOINC to run on the rest.

It would be great if Microsoft would incorporate "real software management software" into Windows 7, especially as we get more and more cpu cores to work with. Running BIONC on a multi-core cpu, all the cores appear to be sharing rather that fixed on a task.

Also I've heard that there is a non-GUI version of Server 2008 specifically for number crunching. Anyone familiar w/it.

Finally what is the best video card to get for this project, a 9800 GX2? Which has the better GPU for number crunching Nvidia or ATI?

Thx

Some time ago (don't remember BOINC version number), some clients were written with a CPU Affinity that allowed one to specify a core. The current version of BOINC allows you to restrict the number of cores used, but is not capable of picking the specific core.

ATI cards are not supported (yet) for this project. With 256 (128x2) shaders and 576 GFLOPS x 2, the 9800GX2 probably edges out the GTX280(240 shaders and 933 GFLOPS). Here, of course, I am assuming a single card install--SLI'd pairs of cheaper cards such as the 9800GTX could give you more bang for the buck.

So any idea why only one of my cores is number crunching, and not the other?

Again, how do I know if my GPU is running? I ran GPU-Z, and the GPU temperature didn't show any change when I shut down the application in BOINC.

Thx

To how many projects is your computer attached, and do you have only one GPU?

If you are only attached to GPUGRID, and have only one GPU, only one core of the CPU will be used (actually less than one core).
To have CPUs used with GPURID you would have to add a second graphics card, or just attach to another BOINC project to keep the second core busy.

How you know if your GPU is also running?
If you have a GPUGRID task crunching, the GPU is surely used. If it wouldn't be used, the task would fail with some sort of error...

So one (1) cpu core for one (1) gpu core?

So for a Dual Core, I would need either a single 9800 GX2, or two (2) single GPU 9800 cards in SLI, and for a Quad Core, you need two (2) 9800 GX2's in SLI?

Thank you.

In order to crunch on both gpu's, you always need to disable SLI. Two 9800 cards in SLI will only be viewed as 1 GPU, thus only crunching 1 WU at a time. I run two 8800GT cards (not in SLI) and can crunch 2 WU's for GPUGrid at the same time, while using 2 CPU cores (or parts thereof thanks to the CPU < 1 recent modification). The other two cores of my Q6600 are free to crunch other CPU-bound BOINC projects.

But in short, you need two distinct GPUs (or 1 card with 2 GPU's) to use 2 cores and 4 GPUs (2 cards with 2 GPU's) to use 4 cores for GPUGrid (and therefore crunch 1 WU per GPU = 4 total simultaneously).
