I have a task running now that will not meet the deadline of 5/14.
It is the longest-running task that I've ever received from GPUGrid - 6 days on my current card. Usually, they take 2 days. I hope this isn't a trend. If so, I'll have to invest in a new card.
Does GPUGrid enforce its deadlines, i.e., will I get no credit for this work? |

Don't know for sure about the credits, it might depend on when a resend is issued/returned (before your task is completed by you and returned or after the resend is returned). If you are likely to return it inside 6days I would certainly continue, however if it goes out to another system check what it goes to - if it's a fast card then it will likely return it quickly.
Whatever the outcome I would be inclined to update the GTX 650 (1024MB). It's only got 1GB GDDR which can be an issue, it's an entry level crunching card and is approaching 3 generations old (when pascal turns up).
Your GPU has a TDP of 64W so I would check your PSU's capabilities before upgrading the GPU. A 750 Ti is 60W so that might be an option if you can pick up a cheap 2GB version. The next card up is a GTX950 but has a 90W TDP! Yes NV staggeringly decided to Not release a GM207.
The best option might well be to wait until Pascal turns up, but an equivalent card (from a power usage view) might be further down the line.

Skgiven,
Thanks for the recommendation.
I've been wanting to upgrade for some time now so I'll check out the GTX950 boards.
I've got a 750 watt power supply so that's no problem. |

From what I can see on-line, you can pick up a new GTX960 for about the same price as a used 960 and only slightly more than a GTX950; ~ $170 vs $150, ~ 30% more performance for 13% more cost, if that interests you.

My ASUS SABERTOOTH 990FX R2.0 mobo is PCIe 2.0 x16 spec, not 3.0 that all these boards are built to.
I know people say that you can run a 3.0 board in a 2.0 slot and suffer only mild to no discernable performance degradation, but I've never tried it. I'm not a gamer and I'm not that well-versed in graphics cards.
Do you think I should try it?
If yes, these boards all had good reviews. Any recommendations?

From the above, this one is the best value for money in my opinion,

Note that a GTX1070 is expected on the 10th June costing ~$379 but there hasn't been an official GTX1060 release date. When a 1060 (or similar) does turn up it might not work here for some time and it's likely to cost a lot more than the $159+pp you are looking at. That said mid-low end previous generation (GTX900) card prices should drop when Pascal does arrive, and they are imminent; the GTX 1080 launch is due in 2 weeks (27th May).

Thanks for your recommendation. I can afford the $175 for that card. I'll do a deeper due-diligence on it and if everything looks good, I'll order it. |

Well, I found out the answer to my question about whether or not GPUGrid enforces deadlines: They do.
My long-running and LATE WU has the status of: "Completed, too late to validate". They gave me zero credit.
The current GPUGrid WU that I'm working on will also miss it's deadline. So, the trend of longer-running WUs on my machine is confirmed.
As such, I'm aborting the WU and detaching from GPUGrid until I buy a new graphics card.
See you guys later. |
