Hello. I had recently moved one of my GTX 670's from one computer to another. I installed the latest drivers, and the GTX 670 was doing fine, crunching on this new computer.

However, after about half a day, it seems that BOINC declares the GPU unusable, and the GPUGRID task is suspended due to an absence of a GPU on the computer.

I tried fixing this problem by installing the drivers again and making sure to click clean install while doing so, but the problem still occurs. The only real fix is to restart, and this only fixes the problem for about a day or so.

This GPU is not running on any overclock, and the temperatures are under 70C because I set the fan to run on its max speed.

Here are the specs of the new computer:
i5-3570k @ 4.5Ghz
Windows 7, always kept updated
7200 RPM drive where BOINC is installed
16 GB of Ram at stock settings
MSI Z77A-G45 motherboard
EVGA reference GTX 670 driver is the latest one, which is 320.18 WHQL

I have never had any problems with this GPU before moving it to another computer. My reason for moving it is that sometimes I play games on the original computer and I didn't like having 2 GPU's not crunching. I felt it was wasting too much computing power.

I appreciated any suggestions, this is a problem that is really bugging me. If nothing works out, I will simply move the GPU back to the original computer. Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Here is what the Boinc Event Viewer has to say:

You didn't mention the PSU in you're new rig, what make and how large is it?

When BOINC says you're card is unusable, does it look like it's installed correctly in device manager? Trying to see if it's a Windows issue, BOINC issue, or hardware.

Edit: It seems TJ is having the same problem you are over here,

http://www.gpugrid.net/forum_thread.php?id=3373#30433

You might want to follow it, SK is helping him. I'm wondering if the Microsoft driver is getting installed from Windows Update, it may not uninstall when running the NVidia driver package and those drivers are notorious for not working correctly.

The PSU is the ModXStream-Pro from OCZ. It is 600W PSU and is 80 Plus. It also claims to support multiple GPU's and Nvidia Sli.

I'm pretty sure it's displayed in Device Manager correctly, it is present under Display Adapters along with the Intel HD 4000.

Also, I was unable to find any errors under the Windows Event Log and I an using the latest Boinc Manager 7.0.64.

Ah, you need to turn off the Intel HD 4000 in you're BIOS, though this may not be the issue, it will help. There should also be a setting to set the primary adapter to PCI/PEG or PEG/PCI, you would want it set to the first one and you shouldn't have to disable the Intel graphics, try it either way (these are all settings in the BIOS).

Ok I set the bios option for IGD to PEG, and now I guess we wait and see if the GPU will work.

I did notice that now the Intel HD 4000 is not listed in Device Manager anymore.

Did you try creating a cc_config.xml file and save it to you're BOINC Data Folder?

<cc_config>
<options>
<use_all_gpus>1</use_all_gpus>
</options>
</cc_config>

Paste that in note pad and save it as cc_config.xml in you're BOINC Data Folder, restart the computer. With the integrated GPU turned off you shouldn't need it but it is good to have it in there. Also, check in Programs and Features and see if a Microsoft NVidia driver snuck in there off of Windows Update. If it's there, uninstall it, restart and try a clean install of the genuine NVidia driver, try the 314.22 instead of the 320.18.

Alright, I added a cc_config file and put in that text. I checked program and features, but only found the drivers I installed from Nvidia. However, just to be safe, I reinstalled 314.22, and checked clean install in the installer.

So now, again, we wait.

If that doesn't work...

i5-3570k @ 4.5Ghz - You might want to nudge that down to ~4.0 to 4.3GHz
Windows 7, always kept updated - Try 'Never Check for Updates' (there are issues with Windows update and Boinc/drivers). Manually once a week is sufficient.

Correction Edit for ref:
- The MSI Z77A-G45 motherboard allows you use the Intel HD Graphics 4000 for the display while the PCIE GPU's are used for crunching.
(Thanks Dylan)

Was going to say, "I would be inclined to reinstall the drivers (advanced, clean install), and then reinstall Boinc. I suggest you right click on the installation file and run as administrator", but wait and see...

Are you sure you can't use both the Intel 4000 HD and the GTX 670 at the same time? I was hoping I could use the HD 4000 for some other project.

I keep windows update on 'download but don't install' setting.

Also, the GPU is doing well so far, but like I said, it's a waiting game.

Well, it happened again! The GPU became unstable, or at least declared so by BOINC, and is no longer working on its tasks. Any new suggestions?

Is there a way I could suspend only one GPU to use for gaming while the other crunches, if I put both of them on the same computer?

Check all of your Boinc settings, Power Options, Prefer Maximum Performance, reinstall Drivers as administrator (advanced, clean install) then Boinc (as administrator), check your antivirus scanners and add Boinc to your firewall exceptions list.

Is there a way I could suspend only one GPU to use for gaming while the other crunches, if I put both of them on the same computer?

GPU specific Snoozing was asked for, partially for this reason, but I'm not expecting it to arrive any time soon.
To automate suspending a single GPU you would have to write a script to change the cc_config file to exclude a GPU, and add a line to tell Boinc to read the config file. You could write another script to undo this.

In Boinc you could set no more GPU tasks and suspend the GPU task running on the GPU you want to game on.

Unstable or unusable? These are different things. I've never seen that the BOINC client says "The GPU became unstable".

5/27/2013 1:45:22 PM | | GPUs have become unusable; disabling tasks

This happens when you connect to your Windows desktop through the built in Remote Desktop feature.
GPUs became usable again when you log in directly from the console.
To avoid that you should use a 3rd party remote control software (Like VNC, TeamViewer, LogMeIn ...)

Is there a way I could suspend only one GPU to use for gaming while the other crunches, if I put both of them on the same computer?

Good question, I think it's not possible. (only both of them by putting them on the "exclusive applications" list)

This is a bit off-topic now, but I just recently managed to get two 660's running GPUGRID and the Intel HD 4000 running as the display and crunching Collatz Conjecture.

I'm mentioning this because you (skgiven) said you weren't able to use both discrete and integrated GPU's at the same time.

I wasn't able to use the processor for display and the GPU exclusively for crunching, but maybe I didn't try hard enough (driver or Bios update, better config...)! Unless it was an Z68A-G45 that I tried it with or a 2nd Generation processor.
At the time I remember the processor wasn't capable of displaying at 1920X1200 so I wasn't that bothered.

My motherboard is an MSI Z77A-G45 (MS-7752) version 1.0
Chipset IB Rev 09
SB Z77 Rev. 04
LPCIO Fintek F71889A
Bios V2.5 from 06/19/2012

I'll upgrade Intel 4000 driver, the Bios and have another go.
What settings did you use to get it to work?

---
Working now!

I noticed that the Intel Graphics driver wasn't working correctly in control panel, so I updated it using Windows update and its now working.
When I tested this in the past the driver appeared to be working in control panel but the NVidia cards weren't displaying in Boinc properly.

Ran into a slight issue after changing the Bios - on a reboot I just got a blank screen. I swapped the monitor cable around but that didn't do anything and neither did a reboot, so I did a cold shut down and when I started it up, it worked.

Other than collatz, what can run on Intel's OpenCL?
I thought Intel GPU's were now OpenCL 1.2. Is that just the i7-4000 and i5-4000 series processors?

I have my GTX660Ti driving my display and the HD4000 running Collatz, with the VGA cable of the monitor connected to keep it from falling asleep. Works nicely so far, except for that additional imaginary desktop which I don't want.

As far as I know Collatz is the 1st project for the Intel HD GPU. There's supposedly also an alpha for Einstein, but for penguins only. Not sure about the OpenCL version, but this hasn't mattered yet.

To start off, I used the Intel driver that MSI provides for the motherboard, and not the one found on Intel's website. For whatever reason, the Intel driver didn't work for me.

I also use Bios version 2.10

I ran into a blank screen, also. I moved the VGA cable from the discrete GPU to the motherboard, where the Intel GPU started using it and the monitor came back to life.

Once I did this, I couldn't use Nvidia Control Panel and Intel's Graphics Panel appeared, therefore I assume that the integrated GPU is now the primary graphics and the Nvidia GPU's are secondary.

According to Intel, the integrated graphics support OpenCL 1.2. See this FAQ page:

http://software.intel.com/en-us/articles/intel-sdk-for-opencl-applications-frequently-asked-questions#ocl_1

I am only aware of Collatz Conjecture supported Intel GPU's, and it appears that Seti@Home is working on something.

When I click on NVidia Control Panel I just get an error message saying that "NVIDIA Display settings are not available. You are not currently using a display attached to an NVIDIA GPU".

Boinc sees all three devices, as does MSI Afterburner and Device Manager, so fine by me.

OpenCL 1.1 might just be a reporting issue in Boinc that gets fixed later. If it's just a reporting issue then it wouldn't matter to an OpenCL1.2 app.

MSI Afterburner is now telling me that my 2 GPU's are using about the same amount of GDDR. This wasn't the case before - the display device was using ~100MB more.
Hopefully I'll get a little more crunching out of that card - which is really the whole point.

I get the same message from the Control Panel. The only problem that would arise would be that you wouldn't be able to change your Control Panel settings.

So far, crunching has gone well for me, without any problems.

Also I recently overclocked the Intel HD 4000 to 1600mhz at 1.350 volts. If you ever overclock, tell me what kind of stable clocks you reach, I'm worried because 1.350 volts is the max the bios allows you to set for GPU voltage, but no other voltage is stable at 1600mhz.

Apparently my HD4000 needs lot's of voltage to OC. I'm still collecting the numbers, but in any case we should continue the discussion over there.
