First I'd like to say that I'm a N00B, & these observations might be inexact & lack details.
I started out using GPUGRID 1st January this year, had virtually no prior knowledge of Linux & no understanding of the way BOINC works. That said, I used Windows 7 Premium 64bit, with the latest non-beta driver & version of BOINC.
There have been improvements & due to the free nature of Linux, I was tempted & started with Mint Linux 8 64bit. Later I went with the KDE version of Mint Linux 8. At that time, Linux was much better & faster then Window, that for me, is no longer the case, but Linux is still free.
I tried Ubuntu 10.04 64bit, Gnome/KDE/XFCE, but I just couldn't get it stable. I had issues with heat, but even after sorting out the cables, opening my windows, cleaning the GPU's, & using nvclock to set fan speeds at 99%, there still were many failed WU's.
Now I've gone back to Mint Linux 8 64bit KDE on all but one PC, (which I will do today), I'll use NVIDIA 256 beta drivers, & BOINC 6.10.56 on that, this system http://www.gpugrid.net/show_host_detail.php?hostid=62706 will in time stop failing (if it does what all the other PC's did, & become much more stable).
I do know that I could improve performance by not using xserver, but my eyes need the candy, which is also why I use KDE.
