Message boards : Graphics cards (GPUs) : Different settings for different processors?

Is there a way I can use different activity settings for different computers? One has adequate cooling to continue using 100% of the CPU time and 100% of the GPU time, but the one I'm thinking of adding is a laptop and not likely to have cooling adequate for the same settings.

From your account screen select view computers, click on details for the one you want to change, then scroll down to the drop down box for location.

That worked, but I've found that Nvidia says that the GPU in the new computer must use a rather old version of the driver until HP (instead of Nvidia) provides a replacement. Also, the Nvidia card in that computer is one that GPUGRID does not recommend using on GPUGRID due to its small number of processors. I'm still waiting for an answer to my question in another thread about whether the longer deadline times GPUGRID now uses moves it (a GeForce G105M) into being more suitable.

The slower GPUs can be used on MW and Collatz as two alternatives besides SaH. The best thing about those two projects is that for the moment at least they are completely agnostic and have applications, if done only by volunteer effort, for all current Resources ... um, well, MW needs DP math and your lower end may not be suitable there ... but that still leaves Collatz ...

Thanks, I'll check those projects.

Thanks, I'll check those projects. Be advised that based on my experience the 9800 is about 1/3 the speed of 260 and above cards so here on GPU grid 6 hour tasks take about 17+ hours on the 9800GT (which is why mine will be retired to standby in case of death mode).

Thanks, I'll check those projects. About 19 hours on my 9800GT. I've thought of buying a new Nvidia card, but I'm not sure I'd still be able to handle installing one. Do you mean the GTX260? Other messages say most boards of that model do NOT work well with GPUGRID.

Thanks, I'll check those projects. I think there is luck of the draw because I don't seem to have those issues with my two cards.... Cross my fingers. And I have been running them for months ... the reason my daily numbers are dropping is because I am starting to do multi-projects on my GPUs to spread the wealth as I try to get it to work ... The hardest part to adding the card is not dropping the screws into the chassis... :) Second hardest part is making sure you have a big enough PSU to handle the upgraded card. The 9800GT uses one 6 pin supplemental power plug. The GTX260 uses two... the GTX280 uses one of 8 pin and one of 6 ... I forget what the GTX295 card uses, memory says the same as the GTX280 ... Assuming you have a good enough PSU. turn off and unplug ... Unscrew the screw in the rear, disconnect the video cable find out how the release works on the MB for the card ... most push down, some pull to the side. Pull the card straight up when the lock is freed ... Reverse for the new card ... There are instructions in the box ... :) As to the install if you still don't feel up to it... most major PC stores like Frys or Best Buy that have large computer selections and sell the cards will have a department that will make the change for a price and maybe a delay (though you maybe able to short circuit that to make a single trip with planning and you take in the PC, buy the card, go have lunch and come back to take home the upgraded PC... you may to upgrade the drivers still ... The last time I priced something like that it ran from $25 to $50 depending ...

I'm already thinking of asking the local Best Buy if they can handle the installation. They don't have a suitable Nvidia card, but a Best Buy online order location elsewhere does.

All the Nvidia Cards are double wide (2 slots) and slightly longer than the 9800GT I can go measure if you like ...

I now have enough trouble even moving the cases enough to open them that I'm not sure whether I can do anything useful with such measurements.

I now have enough trouble even moving the cases enough to open them that I'm not sure whether I can do anything useful with such measurements. Well, good luck ... I started with only one 9800Gt and gradually added cards as I got the money and time to do the upgrades. I understand completely about the health part ... I am fading and if this keeps up in a day or so I won't be posting anything at all for however long ...
