So, as said a couple of weeks ago we would like to upgrade in the near future to CUDA2.2. I need a couple of days warning to flush the cache and upgrade the driver. If you can pick a date and let us know when please. Also what will the minimum driver version be? 185.50? ____________ BOINC blog

Sure, we can fix a date. Let's wait some more comments.
ID: 10984 | Rating: 0 | rate: / Reply Quote
We will probably go to CUDA2.1 fully (compilation and libraries). For limitation of the BOINC client it was not so yet.

Two remarks from my side.

As we are just moving to cuda2.1, we will probably upgrade this week.

I would suggest a news saying "We will switch to blablabla in the next 2 days".

We are still testing cuda version and driver issues.

The problem seems to be more serious. It seems that there is an incompatibility between the BOINC client and drivers 185.xx. We have submitted a bug report to Anderson.

It might not matter all that much for a while -- the server has been out of disk space for 6 hours or so -- not seen any notice that folks who handle the project are in the loop of this though, which is kind of disappointing.

I'm using XP SP3 32-bit w/ 185.85 w/ BOINC 6.5.0, for about a month and a half. I have gotten some errors, but generally maybe 1 or 2 / week (out of 25 or so WU's). It's been over 5 days without any error, so maybe it's better. I do OC some, so I don't know if that leads to the occasionally error or something else is the cause.

Is there anyone with Windows Vista 32 which can run 185.xx? I am running Vista 32 SP1 / 185.85 / Phenom2 955BE 4Gb / 9800GTX+ 512Gb Happy to run something (at my risk of course - no worries there) if you want me to Had some recent hassles over last 2/3 weeks, couple of download failures - and a problem vis memory triggered blue screens. The latter turned out to be the Card memory clocked too high, I turned it back to stock 1100X2, and kept the shader etc o/c'd and all been well since. Regards Zy

I had been wondering what was going on with my Linux installations. Sabayon 4.1 64bit stopped working with Gpugrid after the upgrade to the 185 Nvidia driver as did Suse Linux 64bit. Windows XP x64 is working very well with the 186.18 Nvidia driver. In fact, the Windows XP x64 is more stable and uses less resources than it did with earlier versions of the Nvidia driver.

It seems that 185.xx it works for Vista 64. I had been complaining about the 185.X series on 64-bit Linux since it was released in April. Only recently has Nvidia admitted there was an issue with the driver..... Nvidia Forum I don't know if the 185.X series will be fixed or if they'll skip it and go to the 190.X series. Hi Guys,
ID: 11180 | Rating: 0 | rate: / Reply Quote
Hi Guys, I don't have any experience with XP64 as I run the 32 bit version of XP on my rigs. I run the 182.50 drivers which seem to be stable with GPUgrid. You might want to upgrade your BOINC client to 6.6.36 or 6.6.37 as they did a couple of cuda fixes (to release video ram) in later versions, which may be part of your issues. I have 6.6.37 running on all my machines. As for Seti, yes it seems a more forgiving cuda app (it was ported by nvidia). It doesn't seem to care what version drivers you run. GPUgrid are more particular, hence the attempt to get to a cuda 2.2 app that runs with "current" drivers. ____________ BOINC blog
ID: 11186 | Rating: 0 | rate: / Reply Quote
I am having problems with GPUGRID with drivers 185.18.08 in Linux. Is there anyway I could contribute to getting this issue fixed? I have experience developing CUDA programs and cross platform compiling.
ID: 11250 | Rating: 0 | rate: / Reply Quote
nvidia is on it now. | |
ID: 11256 | Rating: 0 | rate: / Reply Quote
So it is a problem with the drivers? Is there any information about what is happening with the driver that is causing this problem? It could be useful to know as I am having problems with one of CUDA programs and it could be related.

Yes, the 185.X series does not work with GPUGrid. Revert to the 180.X series drivers until there's a fix.
ID: 11271 | Rating: 0 | rate: / Reply Quote
It does not work for gpugrid because we are the only project on Linux.

Here's the post on the Nvidia forms where they admit there's a problem.....from "Netllama" @ Nvidia Corp. I keep asking about progress, but so far, they just keep releasing more crap. Also, in the reply is my original bug reports I posted on NVNews boards. Go ahead, pile on and pester them, maybe it'll get done quicker....
ID: 11275 | Rating: 0 | rate: / Reply Quote
I didn't read this thread before I joined, so just went ahead and attached anyway. Had been running driver 185.85 so I could use the CUDA 2.2 DLLs (rt and fft) at SETI: no problems here at all.

What happened on your Linux box? That been the issue.
ID: 11277 | Rating: 0 | rate: / Reply Quote
Is the move to CUDA 2.2 going to work for Linux? The 185 and 190 series drivers do not work with GPUGrid on Linux. Are we just "out" until NVIDIA gets off their rear ends?
ID: 11311 | Rating: 0 | rate: / Reply Quote
You should install driver for CUDA2.1 as suggested in join page. Those work fine.
ID: 11359 | Rating: 0 | rate: / Reply Quote
It seems that we were able to hack it. I have just upgraded a new Linux application. It's an incompatibility between the driver and the way boinc execute the application. Setting the PATH fixes it.

OK, here's an important update....I was able to get the 190.18 driver to start crunching successfully under openSUSE. Just not under any incarnation of the release openSUSE 11.1. I am now testing release 11.2 Milestone 4 from http://software.opensuse.org/developer. You will need to install the kernel packages listed on this openSUSE/NVIDIA page to get the 190.18 driver to sucessfully compile, however, I am now running the CUDA 2.3 version on openSUSE, so at least I won't be left behind after this weekend's swiutch.....;-).
ID: 11384 | Rating: 0 | rate: / Reply Quote
Is your success related to the new app?
ID: 11396 | Rating: 0 | rate: / Reply Quote
No, I tried 190.18 on SUSE 11.1 before I decided to try Gentoo Linux. After that failed abysmally (yes, I'm a linux-lite person ;-) ), I tried Fedora 11, after I couldn't log into that installation as root, I downloaded openSUSE 11.2 Milestone 4 because I really didn't feel like reinstalling 11.1, which I knew was a problem, and then having to re-install KDE 4.2.4.

Your seems to be a card problem, either overclocking or something else. Its happening to 4 cards that have the new 185.18.14 drivers. None of them are overclocked, I thought you couldn't overclock GPUs in linux. All are running fedora 11 x64 and all worked fine with 180.22 drivers. Is anyone successfully running the new drivers with fedora 11 x64?

I am running Suse 11.2 Milestone 4 with the beta 190 driver. The fix/workaround for Gpugrid and BOINC works and is stable. I had to delete the old work and settings and reset the project to get it to move forward. If you have any remnants of the old work units or settings, you will need to detach or reset to get rid of them. Detach may be better since it erases the old files.

Is it abnormal for the boinc manager to report driver version 0? I have Fedora 11 x64 on a 8800GT. It recognizes the card fine though. Reason I ask is, that it errored out just now on a workunit after a short time (1 hour maybe). And it used to work fine before the upgrade to 185 from 180.xx.
ID: 11509 | Rating: 0 | rate: / Reply Quote
you will need to detach or reset to get rid of them. Detach may be better since it erases the old files. ok, my LD_LIBRARY_PATH trick didn't work for the 2 remaining machines :( I've now detach/attached them, we'll see what happens tomorrow when they get more WUs thanks for the tip

ID: 11627 | Rating: 0 | rate: / Reply Quote
To be honest, I'm still relatively new to Linux myself, so it may have been more luck than judgement. I got a bit annoyed with it after the 3rd failed attempt, to install 190.18, and went through and totally removed anything starting with 'nvidia'. I didn't just "uninstall", I "removed completely". As far as I am aware the 190.18 download contains everything necessary for a complete install from scratch so, I figured, why leave anything there to get messed up. During install, I got a ton of error messages about not being able to write to, or find, certain files so I assume it wrote all new files because it all loaded successfully and works great now. Sorry I can't give you a more tecnically precise run-through. By that time, I had reached the point where I was going to completely reinstall Ubuntu and start again. Mark
